Kelly Cartus – Freelance Professional Violinist

3Kelly Cartus grew up in Rockland County, New York (just outside New York City). Her musical development began early, as her father has been a professional musician and teacher for over 50 years. Kelly began playing the violin at the age of four and knew at an early age that she wanted to follow in her father’s footsteps. As a young girl, she would frequently accompany her dad to his various concerts. Her love and passion for music grew from watching and listening to these performances, as well as from the guidance and support from her parents and from her various music teachers.

As a teenager, she moved with her family to Clarence, NY. She studied violin with the late Philip Teibel during High School, and with Alan Heatherington and Thomas Halpin during College. She earned her BFA in Music Education from SUNY at Buffalo, then moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. There Kelly taught in the public schools and at the University of Utah, where she pursued a Master’s degree in Music. In 1995, she happily returned to Western New York. She furthered her education at SUNY College at Fredonia, from which she earned a Master’s in Music Education. At that same time, she began teaching in area public schools, including the Grand Island Central School District and the Lake Shore Central School District.

Kelly has maintained a successful private lesson studio for over 25 years, and she regularly performs for String Brothers ( and ‘Essential Elegance’ String Quartet (based in Lockport, NY). In both of these groups, Kelly performs at area weddings and other social functions. She has been a member in the Amherst Symphony Orchestra since 2000, and has performed with the Amherst Chamber Ensemble.

Always looking to expand her knowledge as well as ways to help promote health and wellness, Kelly is a graduate of the New York Institute of Massage. She is a NYS Licensed and Nationally Board Certified Massage Therapist and works full-time as a Licensed Massage Therapist. In her spare time, she enjoys rowing and coaching rowing (crew), skiing, reading, baking, pilates, and many seasonal outdoor activities.
